The National Flag handover from the KDF contingent who participated in East Africa Military Games and Cultural events 2017 ceremony took place on Wednesday, 20 September 2017, at the Defence Headquarters, Nairobi.
Chef-De-Mission of the KDF team Brigadier Daniel Pyaban presented the flag to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Samson Mwathethe.
Speaking during the event, General Mwathethe expressed his joy by welcoming the EAC military games team back into the Country, and by extension into the KDF fraternity from the just concluded 11th Edition of the East Africa Community Military games and cultural events that were held in Burundi, from 24th August to 6th September 2017.
“I want also to express my gratitude and that of entire KDF fraternity to you for the exemplary performance you displayed in the games that made KDF to ultimately emerge overall winners with a total of 4 goals of gold medals won in the men football, netball, women volleyball, cross-country women and silver medal in the cross country men. Indeed you lidded the concept I gave you on the 18th of August 2017 on presenting our flag to you prior to your departure to Burundi and performed much better than you did last year in Rwanda”. Said General Mwathethe.
The CDF also added that, He is impressed by the performances of ladies who managed to win gold medal in their disciplines, including the ever elusive volleyball trophy that is normally taken by the Tanzanian’s. He continue by saying that he has been briefed on the professional manner in which the KDF team conducted themselves while in Burundi, they played well against their EAC colleagues during the games.
General Mwathethe assured all the teams that the Defence Forces sports control board will vigorously continue to support all the sporting disciplines within the Kenya Defence Force. “To this end, I sincerely extend my gratitude to the service commanders and the chairman of the KDF sports control board for the support they give to ensure greater performance in various sports disciplines.
In conclusion, the CDF ended his speech by congratulating the teams which won on the just concluded EAC military games by urging the officials and coaches of all teams to ensure that the standards sets are emulated and maintained.
Present during the occasion were Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF), Lieutenant General Kasaon, Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge Personnel and Logistics Major General Samuel Nandwa among other Senior Officers, Officers, the Defence Forces Sergeant Major Warrant Officer I J Muthoka among other services members.
