The Kenya Army soldiers from Armoured Brigade participated in a tree-planting exercise at Githongo area, Abothugucii West Ward, Meru County on Wednesday 21 March 2018. Other than being in adherence to the Environmental Soldier Programme, the exercise was also in commemoration of the International Day of Forests. Soldiers were drawn from Isiolo Units.

The exercise was undertaken in conjunction with the Meru County Government, with the Deputy Governor & other stakeholders in attendance. The Mariara River Rehabilitation initiative was also launched during the exercise. The idea is the planting of bamboo plants to replace the existing water-sapping eucalyptus & blue gum trees. An approximate of 3000 seedlings was planted by the Kenya Army personnel. The seedlings were supplied by the Green Pot Enterprises company (“The Bamboo People”, as their tagline goes).

The target, as expressed by the Deputy Governor, is to improve the National Forest Cover from the current 6.9% to 15%. It was however observed that Meru County’s forest cover stands at 18.3%.

The exercise commenced at 0830hrs (the County Government officials arrived at around 1245hrs) & ended at 1615hrs after the Deputy Governor’s address.
