Isiolo Team scooped this year’s Second Edition of the Kenya Army Cross Country Championships title while Lanet Team came second followed by Garissa in the championships held at Kahawa Garrison.
The championship is the last major athletic events in the Kenya Army sports calendar this year and also the greatest in the Kenya Army Athletics calendar.
Competing teams included Lanet, Nanyuki, Garrisa, Gilgil, Marsabit, Isiolo, Embakasi, Thika, Kahawa, and Nairobi.
The races were 10 kilometres and 2 kilometres relays for both men and women. The winner of the 10-kilometre women race was Corporal Joycline Jepkosgei of Garissa while Private Irene Kamais of Thika and Private Mercy Wanjiru from Lanet took the second and third positions respectively.
Private Kennedy Njiru of Lanet led in the men 10 kilometre race while Private Fredrick Moranga of Isiolo and Erick Tirop of Thika took second and third positions respectively.
In the relays, Lanet led while Garrisa and Kahawa took second and third positions respectively.
The occasion was graced by the Deputy Army Commander Major General Thomas Chepkuto. He congratulated the winners and said the championships provided an avenue to select the finest athletes who will participate in subsequent military championships.
He added, ‘‘the event provides a good public image for sports persons in the military to shine and interact with civilians.”
Among other senior military officers during the event included General Officer Commanding Eastern Command Major General Ayub Matiiri, Chairman Athletics Kenya Defence Forces Brigadier Daniel Pyaban, Commander Artillery Brigade Brigadier Issack Muchendu and Commander Armoured Brigade Brigadier Muthuri Kiugu among other senior officers.
