Kenya Army 17th Battalion on 21st March commemorated the International Day of Forests by planting trees at Modika, Garissa under the theme “Forest and Education” This event was in partnership withtheCounty Government of Garissa, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forestry Service, Kenya Forestry Research Institute, Kenya Commercial Bank and Youth Empowerment Development groups from Fafi and Garissa.
The 17 Kenya Rifles that relocated to Modika barracks in Garissa County earlier this year, have set a vision to counter the adverse climatic conditions in Modikaarea by planting more trees which will improve environment conservation and sustainability of the area that is semi-arid. This is in line with KDF’s Environmental Soldier Programme whose mission is to make a practical contribution to National efforts aimed at mitigating environmental degradation.
Presiding over the exercise, Commander 6 Brigade, Brigadier William Shume thanked all stakeholders present for coming together and conducting such a noble exercise for the good of Modika habitat. He noted that sustainable management and use forest resources are key in combating climate change and poverty.
“We are committed to make Garissa a better place and we begin this campaign today by planting over 700 tree seedlings, in the future we will extend the same to the local community so that they can also understand the essence of environmental conservation,” he said.
Also addressing the participants, Deputy County Commissioner, Garissa Samuel Njuguna also emphasized on the importance of tree planting as he applauded the good will from other agencies who volunteered to donate and participate in this crucial exercise pointing to the county’s bigger target to plant 600,000 tree seedlings before the end of June, 2019.
