Kenya Army Has a New ASM

Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Hamud Abdalla Said is the new Kenya Army Sargent Major. WO1 Hamud officially took over the esteemed office in a ceremony at Headquarters Kenya Army Ngao Gardens on 16th April, 2019.

The new ASM, takes over the helm after his predecessor WO1 Elijah Koranga was promoted to Defence Forces Sergeant Major after a short stint (36 days) in office as the Kenya Army Sergeant Major.

The incoming ASM WOI Hamud boasts of a distinguished career in the Kenya Army Service spanning over twenty years. Having been enlisted in 1979, he was posted to 9KR after finishing the basic recruits training. In his dedicated career, WO1 Hamud has had an opportunity to serve as the RSM for both 15KR in Mariakani and the Recruits Training School in Eldoret. He also previously worked for 6th Brigade and Embakasi Garrison as the Brigade Sergeant Major.

In his other accomplishments, the incoming ASM served in the United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Namibia (1982) and in the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in 2017. He has so far received 13medals which include the Silver Star, Distinguished Service Member, Long Service, good conduct among others.

As he was officially being confirmed, the incoming ASM was adorned with a new dress code that involved his WO1 badge being removed and replaced with the ASM badge. His forage cap was also replaced and he was handed a cane stick as a symbol of power.

Speaking during the event, Commander Kenya Army General Walter Raria congratulated both the outgoing and incoming ASM’s for their new appointments. “WO1 Hamud has risen this far due to his dedication, discipline and good relation with fellow soldiers” he reiterated.

In his closing remarks, Gen Raria encouraged all service members to work harder since every soldier had an opportunity to achieve the top most appointment such as the ASM and DSM regardless of their current ranks or units.
