The Deputy Army Commander Major General (Maj Gen) Thomas Chepkuto presented the Kenya Army Band (KAB) and School of Music with their new flags and rebranded musical equipment in an event full of pomp and colour held at Lang’ata Barracks on 07th August, 2019.

In his speech, Maj Gen Chepkuto hailed the KAB for their dedication noting their presence in all national and military events entertaining guests with well-crafted musical tunes.  He further commended them on their vital role not only in the military but in the society citing “by playing music you not only entertain but honour our country by promoting culture through music, you also contribute towards the memorable moments shared by the guests in these national events.

The KAB play a variety of music styles to inspire soldiers, foster the support of citizens and promote national interests at home and abroad. The KAB was started in 1930, and operated under the British Protectorate within the jurisdiction of Kings African Rifles (KAR). The band has over the years progressively evolved adapting to the current trends of music whilst maintaining the professional military standards required.

KAB was later upgraded to a full unit on 11th August 2018 with Lt Col Clement Nyakundi as its first Commanding officer, Lt Col Nthiga Njagi as the the commandant of the Defence Forces School of Music and Lt Col Namboka Makadia as the Director of Music.
