Lieutenant General Leonard Muriuki Ngondi CBS, OGW, ‘ndc’ ‘psc’ (K)

Lieutenant General Leonard Muriuki Ngondi was born in Central Kenya on 29th September 1959. He was commissioned in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) as a Second Lieutenant of the Infantry Corps 20 years later in 1979.

Lieutenant General Ngondi was appointed the Army Commander by the President and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces on 17 April 2015. Prior to his appointment, Lieutenant General Ngondi was the Force Commander, United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) from December 2012 to February 2015. Lieutenant General Ngondi previously held command appointments in the KDF which included General Officer Commanding (GOC) Western Command, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Eastern Command, 2 Brigade Commander,4th Brigade Commander and Commanding Officer 3rd Kenya Rifles.

In addition to Command positions, Lieutenant General Ngondi served as a Deputy Commandant Defence Staff College, Commandant School of Infantry and staff appointments in different capacities at the Brigade and Army Headquarters.

In the International arena, Lieutenant General Ngondi also served as the Commanding Officer Kenya Battalion in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) in 2000 and as a Company Commander with the Kenyan Contingent in the United Nations Transition and Assistance Mission/Group (UNTAG), Namibia, 1989-90.

Lieutenant General Ngondi is a graduate of the National Defence College and Defence Staff College, Kenyas’ highest military institutions of higher learning.  He also holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Human and Social Studies from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and a Diploma in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.

He is married and has three children, two daughters and a son.
