Officially having received the mantle on 15th February 2019, Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Elijah Aspro Koranga is now the new Kenya Army Sergeant Major (ASM). He succeeds Rtd Warrant Officer 1 William Ogutu, making him the 7th ASM to serve since post-colonial period.

Born on 9th December 1962, WO1 Elijah Koranga has had an illustrious military career that dates back to 1984 when he was enlisted into the military, upon completion of his ‘A’ level in Nakuru. After passing out from Armed forces Training College (AFTC) now Kenya Military Academy (KMA) in Lanet, WO1 Koranga was posted to 3rd Kenya Rifles as a private soldier. Being a talented footballer, he focused his early years in the military playing football for both Scarlet FC now Ulinzi and also enjoyed a stint with Harambee Stars where he managed to scoop numerous accolades both locally and regionally. He finally hanged his boots from football in 1999 and focused on his military career progression.

After his first promotion to a Lance Corporal (L/CPL) in 1989 and appointed section commander number 5 Platoon B Company 3KR, WO1 Koranga has engaged in a number of military training on leadership, operations, peace time and ceremonial duties. The most memorable moments during his prime years as a Platoon Sergeant in 3KR was in 2003 when he was tasked to move with B Company to East Baringo to help contain cattle rustling menace and later on operation ‘Rudisha Ng’ombe’ in 2005 where he managed to gather operational insight and mature into a dependable Senior Non Commissioned Officer (SNCO). WO1 Koranga also takes pride for being part of the team, as the Company Sergeant Major (CSM) D Company 3 Kenya Rifles, in the capture of Port of Kismayu on 2nd October 2012.

As an experienced small arms expert, WO1 Koranga has had an opportunity to represent Kenya Army in various expos and competitions both locally and internationally, offering him opportunities that have helped him grow through rank and file. His rise to leadership picked up in 2014 when he got appointed as Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Faculty of Military Studies at Cadet School KMA. In 2016, he was appointed Kenya Military Academy Sergeant Major, a position he held until his recent promotion to Army Sergeant Major.

Speaking at the Army Hqs, the newly appointed ASM said, “I have a lot of respect for the six ASMs who have served before me knowing very well how hard it is to set the foundation on which we are working today. I can only say that I will pick from where they left and strive to have a credible and efficient Warrant Officers and Non Commissioned Officers cadre, that further the gains of the army with a capacity to research and make positive adjustments where required. I further look forward to being at the helm of a very proficient enlisted Kenya Army membership that will enhance confidence which will be crowned with unquestionable character.”

An Army Sergeant Major is the senior most enlisted service member in the Non Commissioned Officers’ cadre whose responsibility is to serve as the bridge between service members and Commander Kenya Army as an advisor. The Army Sergeant Major is also tasked with assisting in logistics, promoting good order and discipline of enlisted troops.
