The gallant troops of the Kenyan contingent in the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) were honoured with United Nations peace medals in recognition of duties in the service of peace. The auspicious occasion, held on 22 nd November 2006, was presided over by Force Commander Lt Gen Jasbir Lidder. The function was also witnessed by, among others Governor Western Bahr el Ghazal H.E Mark Nyipuoch Ubong, Kenya ‘s Ambassador to Sudan H E Col (Rtd) Elijah Matibo, Deputy Force Commander Brig Simon Karanja, Defence Advisor Khartoum Col P G Kahuha, Head of Office Mr. Fred Babi, Sector Commander Col Nicholas Ndono and Commanding Officer Kenbatt 15, Lt Col Albert Kendegor.
The ceremony commenced with the Force Commander inspecting a meticulous Guard of Honour. Later, the guests were treated to thrilling performances by the local Balanda traditional dance troupe followed by Kenbatt soldiers who performed choral and traditional musical presentations. A thrilling Maasai traditional dance, led by Sgt Ole Suntu closed the session.
In his keynote address, the Force Commander paid glowing tribute to the contingent and lauded their contribution to UNMIS in its effort to ensure that the Comprehensive Peace Accord was fully implemented.
